Choosing a good Domain Name

The best domain names are short, recognisable and memorable, but with 20,000 names being registered a day around the world it is not surprising most of the best ones have gone.

However, if your name is no longer available there are plenty of other options in order for you to get your own unique identity on the World Wide Web.

Lets say you have a fishing shop and you have created a web site hosted by your ISP (internet service provider) with the free space they gave you.  The address could look like ‘www.users.hostdomain.co.uk/~fishing01/’. Not easy to remember or type.

fishing.co.uk’ would be best (but someone bought that in 1996)

‘ukfishing.co.uk’ is more specific (that went in 1999, not all good names were bought many years ago)

‘fishwiz.co.uk’ now that is still free (August 2000), it is short and sharp and will catch peoples eye in adverts, it may not mean anything in the English language but is easy to remember.

Fine examples are Yahoo.com one of the largest search engines and Amazon.com the online bookstore, the names don’t mean much but people hear/read the names and remember them when next searching on the Internet.

There are many ways of choosing a name; it could be fun, related to the business or hobby, personal, or even more specific. Lets take fishing again, if you lived in Scotland you could pick ‘fishinginscotland.co.uk’ not easy to read, but you would know what the site is about by the name. Then someone who types ‘fishing’ & ‘Scotland’ in a search engine should find your site near the top of the list, as your name is relevant to the search.

Choosing a name does not stop there, if you are choosing a name for your local club then one name is all you need. But for a business/company, with multiple products it is becoming common to purchase multiple names, like advertising, the more presence you have, the easier it is to find you or your products.

Lets use ‘fishwiz.co.uk’, your site sells rods, reels and bait and you register     ‘fishingrodsforsale.co.uk’,  ‘baitforsale.co.uk’ etc. Now not only will your site be found under fishing, but also fishing rods and bait as the other names can direct the searcher to your main web site.

Note:
Although there are many ways to choose a name there are specific rules set by the naming authorities that have to be adhered to see Registration Rules
